MOMMY & SOPHIE

GRANDPA & SOPHIE

Yesterday, we went shopping at Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. We happen to saw an animal exhibition at the heart of the mall. There were horses, ponies, goats, donkey, pig, and sheep that were kept in a cozy little barn. Grandpa and Nana wanted to let Sophie see the cattle up close so they fell in the long line of children eagerly waiting for their chance to pet the friendly animals. But before Sophie reached the end of the line, they closed the fence in time for the animals' feeding time. Poor little Sophie only got to see the animals from a distance as grandpa pointed out each of the animals. But don't you fret, little Sophie, coz Uncle Karl promised take us to the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove for a wild safari adventure on Monday. :)

Sophie the Pooh
Saturday, August 30, 2008 / 10:00 AM

It's not even Halloween and Sophie already has a costume!
I now present... Sophie the Pooh! :)

Sophie the Pooh sits on the couch staring innocently at Mommy's camera.
She doesn't know how cute she is. Doesn't know how irresistable she is.
She doesn't know how much I love her. :)

Sophie the Pooh plays with the door spring!
She is amazed at how the spring expands as she pulls it. :)

Sophie the Pooh
knocks on the glass kitchen door!
A cute little face peeking through the tall glass door.
She is playing peek-a-boo with Nana who is busy cooking inside. :)

Missing the Man of My Life
Friday, August 29, 2008 / 12:15 AM

I MISS YOU

It's been a week since we last said goodbye in the busy airport. As I walked my way further into the terminal, I glanced back at him. He stood there waving goodbye. Though I can't see his face clearly, I know he was sad to watch his wife and baby go. But B swallowed it all. I miss you so much, B. How I wish you're here with me and Sophie. Know what? I'm no longer used to waking up without you by my side. The bed is awfully big. It makes me long for you even more. No longer used to walking alone with no one to hold my hand. No longer used to living my life without you... It just doesn't make any sense at all.

FLIRTY RIDE

Nana bought a flirty pink umbrella stroller for Sophie. It is baby pink with polka dots. Sophie finally graduated from her heavy and bulky travel system. She now sits pretty in her new umbrella stroller as she further explores Vancouver. Thanks a lot, Nana! :)

GRANDDAUGHTERS

Barbara Burrows

Oh Lord, I do not ask for much
Eternal beauty, or youth, or such
Just give me a little hand to hold
And I'll forget that I'm growing old

I do not ask for cloudless skies
A life that's free from tears and sighs
Just give me a little face to kiss
And anxious moments will turn to bliss

For what is there, really, that means so much
As little hands that reach and touch
As little eyes that search and see
Only the best in fragile me?

So let me grow more loving and wise
By looking at life through their wide eyes
For through these little ones, you have given
This grateful grandmother a glimpse of Heaven

"SWEETIE"

Whenever I say "sweetie", Sophie would make an irresistably cute pose. She would tilt her little head sideways with her hand and smile sweetly back at Mommy. It makes my heart melt. Love you, sweetie! You're Mommy's one and only! :)

Sophie Strolls at Richmond Park
Monday, August 25, 2008 / 12:18 AM

Today, Sophie and I woke up to a sunny morning. After having quaker oats and grapes for breakfast, my mom and I took Sophie strolling at Richmond Park.

BABY SWING

I sat Sophie on a baby swing and and swayed her gently back and forth. Sophie giggled with excitement as the swing took her high up in the air. She was so happy. There's nothing in this world that can compare to seeing your own child filled with so much joy. :)

MOMMY & SOPHIE

In Sophie's innocent eyes, the playground was a big wonderland. There were slides with different curves and heights, colorful seesaws, swings, and monkey bars. The kids are running around merrily filling the air with fun laughter. Holding my hand, Sophie stared before her wonderland with so much awe. She was still too small for most of the playground activities. She can hardly walk on her own, stumbling after a few steps. But someday, I know that Sophie will let go of my hand and run with all the children in the playground. And I know it's not gonna be long from now. :)

PS. Thanks Uncle Dennis & Aunt Shar for Sophie's Old Navy trench coat!

7458 HOLLY

This is my dad and mom's new house in Canada. I love how my mom filled her new home with beautiful flowers. It's also exciting how everything is shiny and new inside. The furniture, interior accents, and linens made this home very warm and cozy. But most of all, it's the family who live inside that turned this house into a beautiful home.

LITTLE COUCH POTATO

Sophie loves sitting on Nana's soft couch while watching cartoons.
She is the cutest accent in the living room!

BABY BED BUG

Here is Sophie crawling on Grandpa and Nana's new bed.
She is one cute bed bug. :)

This beautiful home is where Sophie and I will be staying in our month-long vacation. :)

Baby Jetsetter

BABY JETSETTER

And so here I am again in Vancouver. The flight was rather long and exhausting. Travelling with Sophie is hard. But travelling oceans away without Sophie is so much more difficult. I can never stand being apart from my precious baby. Sophie was well-behaved in the airplane. She slept twice in her bassinet without a care in the world. She would open her eyes every so often to look at me and make sure I'm still by her side. The truth is that Sophie never has to worry. Because I will always be by her side.

I'm so happy to finally see my mom again and to show her how beautiful Sophie has grown over the months. I've missed her so much. So much that I can smile at her when she's nagging me again. Sophie and I are enjoying our vacation here with my family. But there's an empty space in my heart that calls out for B. How I wish B can come with us. But I know that time will fly by and it will be time to go back to Manila again where my family no longer are. And so I just wake up each day and spend precious moments with my dad and mom who I know I'm gonna miss so much.

Cucina Gayuma
Friday, August 22, 2008 / 2:00 AM

EILEEN, SAB, AND KATE

Before I left for Vancouver, I had dinner with my two girlfriends, Kate and Eileen, at Cucina Gayuma. At first, I thought that this restaurant was the same Gayuma that I frequented when I was still attending college in the Ateneo. It turned out to be a different one though it has the same quaint old Spanish-Filipino ambiance. I only realized that when I glanced at the menu. But it doesn't matter. Afterall, it was time for us to explore exciting new flavors :)

SEAFOOD ALIGUE PASTA

I know that crab fat is very high in cholesterol. But I just really love crabs and that yummy yellow substance. Cucina Gayuma's Seafood Aligue Pasta is by far the best aligue pasta I have ever tasted. The aligue sauce is delightfully rich and creamy while the clams, prawns, and squids are cooked fresh to make that perfect pasta recipe. It was so delicious that we ordered two plates of the pasta, one after the other. :)

CHEESE CRUSTED BAKED FISH

Said to be the restaurant's bestseller, this baked fish is cooked with layers of cheese, shallots, and mushrooms sandwiched between a fillet of cream dory. I was excited to try this dish but to my disappointment, the cheese and fish were a little bland to my taste.

BEEF STEAK

Kate ordered beef steak (ox tongue) in thick mushroom gravy. I didn't get to try this one. Not because Kate finished it all up. But because admittedly, I am scared to eat ox tongue.

PANNA COTTA

Just when we were about to pick something for desserts, Fiona, the restaurant's young owner, came to our table, introduced herself, and offered to give us Panna Cotta on the house. The Panna Cotta was generously sprinkled with crushed pili nuts. It was such a sweet way to end our dinner. :)

Retail Therapy
Thursday, August 21, 2008 / 12:10 AM

BAYO

Sometimes, a girl needs some retail therapy to relax herself from all the stress in a relationship. After we ranted about our lives over lunch at Italianni's, Pam and I went shopping at Greenhills. We both bought ourselves new clothes from Bayo. Pam bought herself a yellow tunic top with Victorian detail and a red top with ruched neckline and puffed sleeves. While I got myself a new light knit sweater in the sober shade of gray. Summer has gone. It's time to shop for fall fashion... I thought to myself. We left the shop with a smile on our face. Shopping is truly therapeutic. :)

Grandpa's 56th Birthday
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 / 12:18 AM

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDPA!

Last Sunday, my dad celebrated his 56th birthday. I let Sophie wear her little scarlet dress, white tights, and Mary Janes. I wore my white sweet-heart halter dress from Urban & Co. High on my waist, I wore my thick red garter belt with croc skin detail from Cherish Closet. Then I put on my patent peep toe red pumps from Pazzion. My handsome date, B wore his maroon button down polo. We had a formal lauriat lunch party at Gloria Maris together with my brother and her fiancee's family. As soon as my dad entered our private room, Sophie and I greeted him a happy birthday. I handed him the gift B and I picked for him from M & S. It was a knitted brown vest. Dad seemed to like it a lot. I even gave him some tips like what to wear beneath the vest. But no matter what he wears with it, Dad will always be the most handsome man in my eyes. Love you, Daddy. :)

SOPHIE GOES TO CHURCH

Grandpa has always wanted us to attend Sunday mass regularly. But most of the time, B and I have a hard time getting out of our bed on Sunday morning. Lately, I've been feeling very guilty and horrible as a Catholic. God has blessed me so much in my life. Yet I find it so hard to give Him a little of my time. Have I been so drawn to the material world that I have forgotten about my own spirituality? Then I have decided that it was time to rekindle my relationship with God. B and I agreed that we should put God at the center of our relationship as a couple. More than that, we both want to bring Sophie closer to the Lord. We want to teach Sophie to pray and have faith in God while she is still small. To start our religious journey as a family, we went to church together last Sunday. In the middle of the mass, a beautiful thought came to my mind... The family that prays together stays together. :)

Classic Cuisine
Monday, August 18, 2008 / 1:28 AM

Honestly, I am not a big fan of Filipino food. I only like a few favorites like lechon and crispy pata. But because B was craving for Filipino food, I gave in. After Sophie's Gymboree class, B and I headed to Classic Cuisine for a late lunch.

TOKWA'T BABOY

LECHON RICE BOWL

I specially love the Lechon Rice Bowl. This bowl is filled with garlic fried rice topped with tender portions of lechon and served with liver gravy. My only comment is that the portion of the lechon is a bit too few.

TORTANG ALIMASAG

Knowing that I love crabs, B ordered Tortang Alimasag from the seafood section of the menu. This dish was served with 3 golden fried crabmeat patties with mustard leaves glazed with sweet chili sauce. Lastly, B ordered Binagoongan Lechon Kawali, one of his favorite Filipino dishes. The crispy fried pork belly was generously topped with bagoong (shrimp paste) and served with grilled eggplant relish on the side.

The Girl Behind Cherish Closet
Sunday, August 17, 2008 / 12:45 AM

MANAGING CHERISH CLOSET

I've always wanted to have my own dress shop. But because I have committed myself to be B's housewife and Sophie's full-time Mommy, I had to let go of some of my dreams. After a year of being a plain housewife, I discovered that I can still fulfill my dreams. I have everything I need at home to put up my own online dress shop. I have an 8 mp digicam that B got for me on our first anniversary. I got a tripod that B bought for the purpose of capturing Sophie's birth live in the hospital. I got a black dress form that can function as a mannequin. I got an Apple laptop that my dad gave me. And lastly, I have a high-speed internet access at home. What else am I waiting for?

It's been a year since I first opened Cherish Closet, my online dress shop in Multiply. I'm flattered that I have already made a name and gained a handful of loyal shoppers. I have always loved fashion and I simply love what I'm doing. Sure, I know that I can never compare with how much B brings home for the family. But I know that this is a stepping stone to my one big dream of having my own dress shop. :)

PS. Thanks to Fran for taking the candid photo. :)

Shabu-Shabu
Saturday, August 16, 2008 / 1:00 AM

Last Wednesday, B and I hosted a shabu-shabu dinner for my Dad and his friends at our flat. Dad will soon be leaving the country. As his daughter, it was the most I can do for him to plan and prepare this hot pot party for him.

VEGETABLES, BEEF, CHICKEN, AND CORN

Fresh from the market, we prepared leafy green vegetables like Kang Kong and Pechay. We also have sukiyaki beef cut into very thin and fine slices, chicken breasts fillet cut into strips, a variety of squid balls, crab balls, lobster balls, salmon balls, fish cakes, and crab sticks, and sweet corn on the cob.

SHRIMPS, SCALLOPS, MUSHROOMS, VEGETABLES

Fresh from the waters, we prepared live seafood like shrimps and scallops. To add flavor to the soup, we have shitake and umbrella mushrooms. We also have tofu and taro.

SHABU-SHABU SAUCE

Lastly, we prepared crushed garlic, minced red bell pepper, chopped spring onions, and sate sauce to be mixed into a special brand of Chinese soy sauce. Shabu-Shabu will never be complete without this special sauce. :)

While enjoying our hot pot dinner, Dr. Albert Dy, my godfather, commented, "You know, we pay 10 times as much when we have shabu-shabu at Green Maris." We all have to agree. Would you believe that we only spent a little more than P2000 for all these and more in the market? And there were more than enough for 15 people. It was all in all a successful dinner party for my Dad. :)

Pasta Carbonara
Friday, August 15, 2008 / 1:55 AM

PASTA CARBONARA

Just the other day, Fran came to visit me in our flat. We were having lunch together. Knowing that Fran loves pasta, I decided to cook Pasta Carbonara. I learned to prepare this simple yet delicious recipe from my mom whom I miss so much. First, I crushed the garlics. Next, I chopped the sweet hams into small squares. Then I threw in San Remo's Angel Hair Pasta in the boiling water. On a shallow pan, I heated a slice of butter and sauteed the garlic. Before the garlics turned brown, I threw in the sweet ham. Then I poured the cream sauce all over the pan. When the cream sauce came to a boil, I threw in the cooked angel hair pasta and mixed them all together. I transferred the pasta on a square dish and topped it with parmesan cheese. Voila... Pasta Carbonara! :)

Cibo
Thursday, August 14, 2008 / 9:04 AM

FARFALLE ALLA VENEZIANA

Do you know that "farfalle" is Italian for butterfly? For a long time now, I have been used to calling these pasta shapes as ribbons or bowties. Farfalle Alla Veneziana is my favorite from the Cibo menu. I am a seafood lover and I've always preferred cream-based pasta sauces over tomato-based. But more than that, I love the fact that the "farfalle" is not overly soaked and swimming in cream sauce. The cream sauce appears to be only a little but is very rich. Even if there are no prawns or clams in the pasta, the taste of seafood is very rich as well. The creaminess of the whole pasta is perfect. I simply love it!

Look Who Loves Lolly?
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 / 5:55 PM

LOLLY BABY

On my last trip to the grocery, I bought a pack of Cowhead strawberry milk lollipops for Sophie. I love the fact that the candy is made up of milk with a sweet flavor of strawberry in it. For weeks and weeks, I would give Sophie a lollipop after her Gymboree playclass as a treat. She would suck with all her cheek muscles for the sweetness of the lolly. It's a very cute sight to see. :)

I LOVE LOLLY, MOMMY

There is just one trouble. That is Sophie would sometimes play with the lolly with her little hands. She would roll the sticky and wet lolly all over her hands and arms. She would even stain her pretty dresses making her smell like milk and strawberry. Sometimes, Sophie would accidentally drop her lolly on the floor. When she saw me pick up her lolly, her eyes were full of hope. But she started crying and throwing tantrums as soon as she saw me throwing the dirty lolly in the garbage can. Sorry, Sophie. Lolly is already dirty...

YOU WANT LOLLY TOO, MOMMY?

But the sweetest thing is that Sophie shares her lolly with Daddy and Mommy. Right smack in the middle of enjoying her lolly, Sophie would pull the lolly out from her mouth and extend her little hands holding the lollipop for Daddy and Mommy to taste. B and I would lick the lolly a little and say the magic words "thank you" to Sophie. Then Sophie would smile. How sweet is that? :)

Beauty and the Beast
Monday, August 11, 2008 / 6:24 PM

Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast

Last night, B and I had our very first movie night with Sophie. From Sophie's DVD cartoons collection, we watched Beauty and the Beast which was first shown way back in 1991. 17 years later, this fairytale film is just as beautiful as I have first seen it when I was still in elementary. It's truly a timeless classic. Disney's Beauty and the Beast is actually my favorite Disney movie. And Belle was my favorite princess. The reason why our baby was named Sophie Belle. :)

They say fairytales don't exist in the real world. There are no fairies in the real world. Only fireflies. The real world is much more complicated than the colorful world of fantasy. But sometimes, I think we just have to stop making a very literal comparison of fairytales and reality. Sure, there are no princesses in this time and age. No ugly beasts prowling in the city. No castles. But the truth that a pure and kind heart can touch and change a cruel man is undeniable in any given time or age. Maybe, if we only start believing in fairytales once more, the real world won't be as cruel and harsh.

I Missed You, Pammie
Sunday, August 10, 2008 / 4:25 AM

She was Pammie. I was Sabbie. We were seatmates back in high school. Back when the talk was still about algebra, prom, chemistry, and boys. We got along so well. I loved listening to her talk. She was also a very good listener to me. We had been there for each other when the boys from the school across the church shattered our hearts. Curse them. We wrote each other long letters even if we saw each other everyday. We call each other at night to talk about the teeniest update of our lives. We always think alike and feel alike. Even our penmanship are so alike. Our classmates have a hard time telling them apart. She was the sister I've always wanted to have. We can sit under the sun the whole day and never run out of things to say.

BRYAN & PAM

BRIAN & SAB

A week ago, Pam just arrived home from Beijing where she spent an entire year. How I missed her so much. We instantly set a lunch date at Cibo and talked all afternoon till night. It's amazing how we easily connected despite all these years and the different paths we took. We had so much to catch up on. We talked mostly about the men of our lives and our dreams for the future. It's such a funny coincidence how Pam's boyfriend not only share the same name but also the same last name as B. We are both going to be Mrs. Ang. Oh I almost forgot that I already am. Being with Pam just reminds me so much of high school. The happiest time of my life. Love ya, Pammie! :)

Poor Little Finger
Saturday, August 9, 2008 / 8:44 PM

BAD MOMMY

I'm a horrible mother. I did not realize that Sophie was playing with the door hinges when I closed the door while I carried her in my arms. Now her ring finger is all red and swollen. She almost lost her finger because of me. Because of my carelessness. What if Sophie really lost her finger? I will never forgive myself. I feel so awful and horrible. How I wish it was my finger who got hurt. The sight of Sophie crying helplessly aches my heart. She is still so small and innocent. Sophie trusted me to take care of her. Yet I end up hurting her. I'm so sorry, Sophie. Mommy's so sorry.

What Happens in Vegas

"I'd rather do nothing and be happy
than do something I know I don't love."

HONEYMOON IN LAS VEGAS

LOVE
Matt White

And love
Such a silly game we play
Like a summer's day in May
What is love? What is love?
I just wanted to be loved
Ohhh Oh

And I, I, I can feel it in your kiss
It just gives me tender bliss
What is love? What is love?
I just wanted to be loved
Ohhh Oh

When I feel you around
I was mad as hell when I hit the ground
When I see you laugh away
It hurts but I just wont say

Oh Oh Oh love
Who can tell me I am lost?
I think that I am strong
What is love? What is love?
I just wanted to be loved
Ohhh Oh

When I feel you around
I was so upset we fell on the ground
When I see you mad at me
It was such a silly thing

Sophie's First Kiss
Wednesday, August 6, 2008 / 12:00 AM

SOPHIE'S FIRST KISS

The sweetest gift I received on my 25th birthday came from Sophie! On my birthday, Sophie gave me her first kiss. Yes, Sophie's first kiss belongs to Mommy! (Sorry, Brian...) It's such an amazing coincidence that Sophie just learned how to kiss about a week ago. In the week of Mommy's birthday. Little Sophie would plant a big smack right on Mommy's lips and few more pecks on Mommy's cheeks. She is so cute making those smacking sounds. My heart melts whenever Sophie kisses me. It's the sweetest thing in this world. It makes my day! Love you, Sophie! :)

Heirloom Scrapbook
Monday, August 4, 2008 / 9:10 AM

HEIRLOOM SCRAPBOOK

I've always wanted a little brother. But because my mom had an hysterectomy after giving birth to me, I never had the chance. Shaun is the little brother I never had. He is sweet, thoughtful, and kind. Through the years, I have seen him grow. And I have always been proud of him. :)

On my birthday, Shaun gave me a very special gift. It is an Heirloom Scrapbook in a royal red velvet box. Shaun knows that I value memories so much. And now I finally have a beautiful box to store all my photos and memorabilia. Inside the velvet box is a calender, scrapbook, photo album, family tree chart, and small compartments for the keepsakes. I am left speechless at how beautifully made this Heirloom Scrapbook is. Day by day, I am going to fill the pages with our special family memories. This velvet box will be a family heritage. A legacy. To be passed on from one generation to the next. Vowed to be preciously kept by the line of daughters.

THANKS SO MUCH, SHAUN!

I have a friend. Her name is Kate. She is known for her cakes. Her cakes have won the hearts of many men. Her cakes are made with secret recipes by a secret baker in a secret kitchen. Clandestine. On my birthday, Kate brought me a huge box of Strawberry Shortcake. It was a strawberry ice cream cake with layers of chiffon. I love the the ice cream coz it has real strawberry bits in it. Finally, the cake is topped with big Californian strawberries. I absolutely loved it!

A Date in Crustasia
Friday, August 1, 2008 / 8:00 PM

HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY!

My birthday will never be complete without having an intimate dinner w/ B. After shopping for my white helmet, B and I had dinner at Crustasia. Crustasia is said to be the haven for the freshest seafood and the best of Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. It was our first time in this Asian restaurant. It was time to have a taste of exotic Asian food. :)

TOM YUM GOONG

B ordered a bowl of Tom Yum Goong. When B gave me a little spoonful of his soup, I was surprised at how rich and tasteful this clear soup is. It made me wonder what exotic Asian spices were used to make this soup. B instantly knew that I loved the soup. He then called the waitress for another bowl of Tom Yum Goong for his wife. :)

VIETNAMESE CRAB & SHRIMP FRIED RICE

This is one of Crustasia's specialty rice. Because I am a seafood lover, I picked this from the menu. This Vietnamese fried rice has a very rich seafood flavor. I totally love it!

BEEF TENDERLOIN IN RED CURRY

Curry lover B, ordered Beef Tenderloin in Red Curry. I am not a curry fan. But I do know how to eat and appreciate curry. But to our dismay, we did not enjoy this curry dish. There are only a few beef tenderloin in the curry bowl. Not to mention, they are cut into very small pieces. B also wasn't happy with the rotti that was served along with this curry dish. It was stiff, overcooked, and burnt.

SAMBAL PRAWNS

Because I was craving for something spicy, I ordered Sambal Prawns. I loved the tangy taste of the jumbo prawns. It was perfect with the Vietnamese fried rice. B and I enjoyed our Vietnamese and Thai dinner. It was great to finally taste some special Vietnamese recipes, the boldest flavors of Thailand, and choice recipes of Southern China. :)
